Punta Uva Beach Guide: Swimming, Snorkeling and Where to Stay
If someone asks me for one beach on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, I send them to Punta Uva. I lived in Costa Rica for five years, still go back often, and know this coast well.
I’m not alone in that opinion anymore. In 2025 it became the only Costa Rican beach on The World’s 50 Best Beaches list. Here’s how to do it right: which side to swim on, how to get there, what things cost, and where to stay.
Punta Uva at a glance
Punta Uva is a reef-sheltered, white-sand beach on Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast, about 8 km (5 miles) south of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, known for calm, clear water, jungle that reaches the sand, and a coral reef you can snorkel from shore. It ranked #41 on The World’s 50 Best Beaches 2025.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Location | Southern Caribbean coast, Limón province, ~8 km south of Puerto Viejo (Mytanfeet) |
| Recognition | #41, The World’s 50 Best Beaches 2025; only Costa Rican beach on the list (Tico Times) |
| Tripadvisor | 4.7/5 from 812 reviews as of September 2026 (Tripadvisor) |
| Entry fee | None |
| Lifeguards | None reported (Toorizta) |
| Best months | January–March per World’s 50 Best Beaches; driest months typically Feb, Mar, Sep, Oct per Mytanfeet |
The 50 Best Beaches ranking, per the Tico Times, came from more than 1,000 travel experts judging eight criteria, including untouched nature, calm conditions, low crowds and natural sounds. If you’ve been here, that list reads like a description.
The two sides of Punta Uva
This is the thing most visitors get wrong. Punta Uva is really two beaches, split by a jungle-covered point.
Playa Punta Uva Arrecife is south of the point. Sally Sees calls it the beach “where you will find the perfect blue waters, white sand and palm trees,” and says the water “is normally very calm.” This is the one in the photos.
Playa Punta Uva proper is north of the point. The same source describes its water as “deeper, and a little rougher” with a deep green color. It’s where the kayak rentals and the river mouth are.
A short trail crosses the point between them. Mytanfeet puts it at 5 to 10 minutes, with views from the peninsula along the way.
My verdict: for swimming and snorkeling, always head to the Arrecife side, south of the point, because the reef sits close to shore and absorbs most of the swell before it reaches the sand. Use the north side for kayaking and the river.
Getting to Punta Uva
Punta Uva is on the one coast road that runs from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo. From Puerto Viejo you have four good options:
- Bike. Estimates run from about 20 minutes, per Toorizta, to “a 45-minute easy ride with stops,” per Crystal Jungle Villa, on a flat road past Cocles and Playa Chiquita. This is how I’d do it.
- Bus. Take the bus to Manzanillo, which Mytanfeet says runs around seven times a day, and ask to get off at Punta Uva.
- Tuk-tuk or taxi. Tripadvisor’s listing mentions three-wheeled taxis as a common way in.
- Car. Easy to drive, harder to park (see below).
Coming from San José first? My San José to Puerto Viejo guide covers the bus, shuttle, drive and flight options. For the road itself, see driving and getting around the Caribbean coast.
Parking
Parking is the main hassle. Mytanfeet says the main lot “is tiny (it’s just the end of a street)” and gets “super crowded on the weekend.”
For the Arrecife side, Sally Sees says you can park behind the line of palm trees at the southern end of the beach. Arrive before mid-morning on weekends and you’ll be fine.
Swimming and safety
On a calm day, Arrecife is the easiest swimming on this coast. On a windy day, it’s a different beach.
Mytanfeet is direct about it: “Do not go in the water if it’s windy, storming or it just looks rough.” Their writer found wind and rough waves on visits in September, November and December, so don’t assume calm just because of the season.
There are no lifeguards. If you get caught in a current, NOAA’s advice is don’t fight it: swim parallel to shore, then back in at an angle.
A few more practical notes:
- Swim early. Wind usually picks up later in the day on this coast, which Crystal Jungle Villa’s snorkel guide notes happens by mid-afternoon.
- Bring water shoes for the rocky and coral patches near the point.
- Keep an eye on your things. It’s a quiet beach, which also means fewer eyes on your bag.
Snorkeling at Punta Uva
Punta Uva sits on a real reef system. Visit Costa Rica describes a protected reef of around 5 km² extending over Punta Uva, Manzanillo and Punta Mona, with brain coral and sea fans.
On the Arrecife side, you can snorkel straight from the beach. Sally Sees says the reef is “very close to the shore, and within a few steps, you’re swimming around corals.” Mytanfeet notes locals rent snorkel gear on the beach.
If you’d rather have a guide, a few options leave from Punta Uva itself (prices as of September 2026):
| Tour | Price | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gandoca Tours – Snorkeling in Punta Uva | $79 per adult incl. tax; kids 6–12 half price | 2.5 hours | Departs Sloth Point at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.; no kids under 6 |
| Punta Uva Dive Center | Varies | Varies | Dive certification courses, shore and boat dives, snorkeling; 4.1 from 90 Tripadvisor reviews |
Visibility swings with the rain. Crystal Jungle Villa says Punta Uva snorkeling is excellent on calm mornings but needs flat, glassy seas, and that heavy rain can drop visibility to under a meter for a day or two.

Kayaking, the point and wildlife
The north side of Punta Uva is where the Punta Uva River meets the sea, and paddling it is one of the best short activities on the coast. Mytanfeet mentions turtles, sloths, toucans and monkeys along the river.
Sally Sees says kayak rentals are available at Sloth Point, and their beach roundup mentions sea caves you can reach by kayak or on foot. Guided options exist too. As of September 2026, The Costa Rica Tour Site lists a two-hour River & Sea Kayak Punta Uva tour at $57 per adult and a Punta Uva Kayak & Hike, departing at 10 a.m., at $62.
Don’t skip the trail over the point. It’s short, it’s shady, and it’s the best vantage point on the beach.
If wildlife is high on your list, pair Punta Uva with my guide to where to see sloths on the Caribbean coast.
Food and facilities
Facilities are thin, and that’s part of the charm. Mytanfeet describes the area as “a few dirt roads, restaurants and hotels,” and Sally Sees saw no public toilets at the Arrecife end.
Tripadvisor’s listing says nearby restaurants offer restrooms and showers for a small fee. For food, Mytanfeet calls Restaurante Selvin’s “the most popular restaurant” in Punta Uva, serving Caribbean cooking. If you want to know what to order, my Caribbean Costa Rican food guide explains the dishes.
Bring water, cash, reef-safe sunscreen and something for shade.
Best time to visit Punta Uva
The World’s 50 Best Beaches listing recommends January through March, with average highs of 29–30°C and lows of 24–25°C. It flags May through November as the peak rainy season.
Mytanfeet adds a local twist: the driest months are typically February, March, September and October. That September–October window is the opposite of the Pacific’s pattern, and it’s one of my favorite times to be here.
Time of day matters as much as month. Early mornings are calmer, clearer and quieter, and the World’s 50 Best Beaches listing recommends them for solitude too.

Where to stay near Punta Uva
Punta Uva has a handful of small lodges rather than big hotels. Here is every property on Tripadvisor’s Punta Uva hotel list with at least 50 reviews and a score of 4.0 or higher, as of September 2026, sorted by score and then review count:
| Property | Tripadvisor rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Casa Viva Eco Lodge | 4.7 | 139 |
| awā Beachfront Hotel | 4.7 | 90 |
| The Toucan Stay Inn | 4.7 | 69 |
| Pachamama Jungle River Lodge | 4.6 | 331 |
| Tree House Beachfront Lodge | 4.4 | 253 |
| Selvin’s Cabinas | 4.2 | 73 |
Casa Viva Eco Lodge, awā Beachfront Hotel and The Toucan Stay Inn share the top score. Pachamama Jungle River Lodge has the most reviews of the group, which makes its 4.6 a very steady number.
Tree House Lodge is the one I know best, since I’ve stayed in all seven of its houses. Full disclosure: the owner is a friend of mine (no financial stake), so weigh my enthusiasm accordingly and lean on the third-party numbers here. It sits on 10 acres on the Playa Chiquita–Punta Uva stretch, a short walk west of Punta Uva’s calm swimming area (the lodge’s FAQ says about 500 meters); founder Edsart Besier bought the land in 1999, and it grew one house at a time. It’s featured in Oyster’s roundup of the 8 best tree house hotels in Costa Rica, and it rates 4.4 from 253 Tripadvisor reviews, #2 of 8 specialty lodging in Punta Uva as of September 2026.
The houses are all different, and the lodge’s own site describes each one. The namesake Tree House is “built on tall stilts” in the forest; the Beach House is built from fallen Níspero trees; the Garden House is almost entirely bamboo and sleeps 4; and the Bungalow, the couples and budget pick, sleeps 2 and sits about 150 m from the beach. There’s even an upcycled 1980s school bus. The lodge also reports a CST sustainability rating of 5 leaves.
Be honest with yourself about what you want, though. Oyster’s review lists no pool, no air-conditioning and stony paths that are hard with luggage; the lodge’s own FAQ says some houses have one air-conditioned room. Some Tripadvisor reviewers mention insects and maintenance wear. If you need a polished, air-conditioned hotel, one of the others will suit you better.

A simple Punta Uva day
Here’s how I’d spend one day here if it were your first time:
- 7:00–10:00: Bike down from Puerto Viejo and swim and snorkel on the Arrecife side while the water is glassy.
- 10:00–11:30: Walk the trail over the point to the north beach.
- 11:30–13:30: Paddle the Punta Uva River, on your own or with a guide.
- Lunch: Caribbean food nearby, then a long, shady break under the palms.
- Afternoon: If the wind picks up, head back to town or on to Manzanillo, where the coast road ends.
The bottom line
Punta Uva is worth the trip: it’s the only Costa Rican beach on The World’s 50 Best Beaches 2025 list, it rates 4.7 on Tripadvisor, and on a calm morning its reef-sheltered Arrecife side is some of the best Caribbean swimming I know. Go early, go on a calm day, and go to the south side of the point.
